Merriweather Post Pavillion / My Girls

Na última edição do Jornal Universitário de Coimbra A Cabra, pode ler-se a crítica musical do ruc'iano José Afonso Biscaia a Merriweather Post Pavillion dos Animal Collective, disco que já passou pelo destaque Pop-Up, e do qual falámos aqui. Uma crítica que o Pop, O Construtor disponibiliza assim como o novo vídeo My Girls dos Animal Collective.

Merriweather Post Pavillion – Animal Collective (2009, Domino)

Mesmo entre aqueles que não acharam Strawberry Jam um quase imperdoável mergulho nas águas turvas da mediocridade (entre os quais me incluo, diga-se), persistia a dúvida se os Animal Collective, apesar de continuarem a conseguir bons momentos no seu estilo que, apesar de já frequentemente imitado continua a ser único e intocável, não teriam entrado numa certa “normalidade”, se se teriam esquecido de todas as coisas bonitas e fora do comum que já nos tinham dado. Parece que a resposta é um categórico “NÃO”, possivelmente sublinhado com um “porra!”. O trio de Maryland (Deakin ficou de fora) volta a ser brilhante em Merriweather Post Pavillion (MPP), mesmo que ouvir o álbum não aperte o coração de felicidade com a mesma intensidade de Feels ou de Sung Tongs , mesmo que não tenham aprendido a lição de concisão de alguns dos grandes discos do ano passado (Abe Vigoda, Times New Viking…), e tenham algumas canções pouco menos que dispensáveis, como Lion in a Coma. À parte isso, os Animal Collective voltam a roçar a perfeição em vários momento ao longo de MPP: É a estrutura, o refrão e as palmas na maravilhosa My Girls, é o êxtase de Summertime Clothes a cantar-nos “I wanna walk around with you/ just you, just you”, é o sol de uma cidade que Noah Lennox vê como quase tropical em Brothersport a aquecer a pele e a encadear-nos. A quase-tropicalidade da nova pop ibérica (ou, pelo menos, com alguma ligação à península), que os Animal Collective já tinham tocado, por exemplo no EP Water Curses, e que aqui é também evidente, por exemplo, na complexa Bluish merece, aliás, alguma reflexão. Mas só depois do final de “Merriweather Post Pavillion”. O tempo em que o álbum estiver a tocar é de contemplação jubilosa: Corações ao alto! Estão de volta os velhos Animal Collective!"

Na próxima sexta-feira (23 de Janeiro), Coimbra recebe no Salão Brasil o cantautor Butcher The Bar, pela mão da associação de promoção e divulgação cultural - Lugar Comum. O Pop, O Construtor assinala a vinda do músico britânico a Coimbra, convidando-o a presentear-nos com algumas das suas escolhas musicais na próxima emissão de Sexta-feira de Pop, o Construtor!

"Na solidão do seu quarto, em Rotherdam (UK), Joel Nicholson (aka. Butcher The Bar), assinou as composições de Sleep at your own speed; um álbum que pela sua atmosfera acústica e frágeis vocalizações, tem captado a atenção de muitos daqueles que seguem de perto o legado de nomes como Elliott Smith ou Nick Drake. Aposta da reconhecida editora europeia Morr Music, Joel incorpora no seu trabalho o traço que define a já denominada bedroom folk, ou seja, um processo criativo autónomo, que depende apenas do DIY, executado sem sair de um estúdio improvisado em casa. Merriweather Post Pavillion – Animal Collective

A minha opinião sobre:

Merriweather Post Pavillion – Animal Collective

Merriweather Post Pavillion (MPP de agora em diante) é o mais recente trabalho da banda Norte-Americana de sede nómada e de distância transatlântica. O álbum soa claramente a Animal Collective (AC de agora em diante), talvez se juntássemos todos os discos da banda a tocar ao mesmo tempo o som que obtínhamos seria qualquer coisa parecida com este MPP – uma complexidade sonora, mas boa.

Os AC primam pela louca e brilhante complexidade sonora, acredito piamente que no processo de produção e pós-produção áudio dos álbuns destes rapazes deve haver muito boa gente com dor de cabeça.

Vocalmente este MPP é qualquer coisa de extraordinário. Melhor ainda é a forma como as diferentes camadas de voz soam tão bem, My Girls, Daily Routine ou Taste são exemplo disso. Estive quase para telefonar ao Doutor Carlos Fiolhais para me ajudar a resolver os complexos teoremas sonoros que são (aqui) corolário de genialidade.

Eu sinto que os trabalhos a solo de Noah Lennox aka Panda Bear estão a ter grandes reflexos no som dos AC. Com alguma ginástica acho que dava para encaixar faixas de Person Pitch ou de Young Prayer neste MPP e vice-versa. Confesso desde já que foi Panda Bear que me abriu horizontes para AC.

O disco é muito bem conseguido e a forma como cresce a cada audição é irrepreensível, cada vez soa melhor e se há dois dias tinha uma faixa favorita, hoje não consigo escolher só uma.

Parece que nos caminhos percorridos pelos AC já não se consegue fazer música sem a ajuda dos sintetizadores e das infinitas possibilidades da electrónica. O que faz deste MPP uma obra para mais tarde recordar é precisamente a capacidade que tem de mostrar a todos como é que se deve usar a electrónica e tudo o mais que esta permite. O medo da novidade que a tantos reprime tem sido para os AC a maior inspiração.

Existem discos que deveriam ser obrigatórios de ouvir e deveria sair em diário da República uma Lei do género: A pessoa que não ouvisse o Sgt Peppers, o Pet Sounds, o Rain Dogs, o Unknown Pleasures ou até o Ok Computer (só para citar alguns) tinha de assistir a um concerto dos Xutos no backstage; e assim, sucessivamente, de disco em disco, até chegar a 2009 e perceberem que Vasco da Gama ao chegar à Índia não foi só para ir buscar tapetes, foi para buscar pimenta.

E é de coisas que dão e apuram o gosto como a pimenta e o sal que este disco se trata.

Muitos já lhe vaticinaram o futuro – disco do ano. Eu não me arrisco a tanto, mas se eu fosse um gajo com umas canções boas e com a ideia de lançar um álbum este ano, ficava quietinho e lançava disco no dia 2 de Janeiro de 2010, para não correr riscos.
