É já amanhã o concerto de Dominique Leone, Sexta-feira, 3 de Julho, a partir da 1h30 no ViaClub, em data única no nosso país e num exclusivo RUC a não perder. After-party com Hedonic2 (pista principal) e Djs RUC (1ºandar)

Dominique Leone tem nome próprio de mulher e apelido italiano. É, apesar disso, Norte-Americano dos quatro costados, nascido e criado no Texas e actualmente radicado em São Francisco. Na próxima sexta-feira, a RUC convida-o a subir ao palco do ViaClub.

Em 2008 varreu o panorama musical independente de surpresa com um disco homónimo que não passou ao lado da imprensa especializada. Menos de um ano depois, já em Abril deste ano, voltou à carga com o tradicionalmente difícil segundo disco, a que chamou Abstract Expression. A tradição parece já não ser o que era, e nada faz crer que compor este álbum tenha sido um trabalho de enorme dificuldade para o autor. Muito menos será para os ouvintes a tarefa de o escutar.

Abstact Expression, tal como o seu predecessor, provoca desde logo uma confusão natural: será este um autor de música pop altamente influenciada pela electrónica, ou ao contrário, um produtor de techno que descobriu a fusão perfeita entre este género e a canção pop mais tradicional? Qualquer dos cenários é admissível, mas o próprio Dominique faz por promover a primeira hipótese como a mais acertada, explicando que as suas raízes musicais se fundam no trabalho de ícones da pop como os Beatles ou os Beach Boys, enquanto que o processo criativo cria a ponte com a música electrónica. A acrescentar a tudo isto convém referir a educação musical clássica que o acompanhou desde tenra idade, e que ainda hoje molda o seu gosto musical, como se pode comprovar na playlist que escolheu a convite da Rádio Universidade, para o programa Pop, o Construtor.

Oi Va Voi - Travelling the Face of the Globe

Nos últimos anos surgiram bastantes projectos americanos que aliam a uma forte sensibilidade pop a influência nas sonoridades originárias do Balcãs e do leste europeu. Nomes como Devotchka, Gogol Bordello, Beirut ou A Hawk and a Hacksaw são alguns dos nomes da face mais visível dessa fusão. Em contrapartida, o mesmo não se passou em terras britânicas, onde as movimentações folk em redor dos ritmos sonoros provenientes dessas regiões geográficas praticamente não se fizeram sentir. Os Oi Va Voi são um dos poucos exemplos dessa realidade, com destaque para a recriação da música judaica, fruto da ascendência familiar de alguns dos seus membros, contando com 3 discos editados antes de 2009, mas com um reconhecimento público relativamente reduzido.

Travelling the Face of the Globe é o 4º album de originais e mantém as premissas dos discos anteriores, ou seja, música judaica (klezmer e companhia), outros ritmos do leste europeu e, se calhar, até latinos e, pontuando essa mistura de sons, uma clara estrutura pop. O início do disco é muito forte. O requinte e a delicadeza dos arranjos de “Waiting”, a profunda espiritualidade de “I Know What You Are” ou o ritmo irrestível do tema título, são, desde logo, um prenúncio para um grande disco. O tema seguinte, “Every Time”, single de apresentação, é um dos poucos passos em falso. A ideia de ter como single um tema com um formato mais easy-listening e baladeiro não foi definitivamente uma boa ideia, como se comprova ouvindo o tema. O outro passo em falso talvez seja, embora em proporções menores, “Foggy Day”, que nos remete um pouco para o ambientalismo dos Zero 7, mas em formato bastante menos interessante. Em todo o caso, nada que diminua acentuadamente o valor do disco e que impeça a existência, por aqui, de outros grandes momentos, como o intimismo presente na adaptação do tradicional hebreu “S’brent”, com voz da húngara Agi Szalóki, os toques etéreos de “Wonder”, o profundamente contagiante “Long Way From Home” ou, a fechar da melhor forma este Travelling the Face of the Globe, a perfeição pop de “Photograph”, com a voz do francês Dick Rivers.

Em suma, pode ainda não ser desta que os Oi Va Voi obtenham o merecido reconhecimento mediático, mas nem por isso este deixa de ser, para mim, um dos grandes discos editados nesta primeira metade de 2009.

P.S. Embora com atraso, aqui está a minha crítica ao disco. Algo que devíamos ter feito com os discos que destacámos ao longo do ano e não fizemos. Fica aqui a minha parte da mea culpa por isso.

Os vencedores do passatempo Simone White no Pop, O Construtor foram Luís Lapa e Paulo Silva. Parabéns!

Alguns dias após a passagem de Jesca Hoop por Coimbra, e na antecâmara do concerto de Jens Lekman e de Pikelet, ainda há tempo para escutarmos a voz doce de Simone White. Esta singer songwriter de origem norte-americana completará desta forma o seu curto périplo pelo nosso país, que contemplará datas em Aveiro e no Porto.

Apesar de ter gravado o seu primeiro trabalho em 2003, Simone White tem tido um percurso reservado, parco em edições, privilegiando o palco e as colaborações com músicos de reconhecido estatuto. O seu segundo longa duração, intitulado "I am the man" e editado apenas em 2007, conferiu-lhe no entanto uma maior visibilidade. Distribuído pela Honest Jons, etiqueta de Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz), este álbum não só lhe rendeu os maiores elogios junto da imprensa norte-americana, como lhe permitiu colaborar em palco com músicos como Tony Allen, Afel Bocoum, Kokanko Sata Doumbia, Candi Staton, Alela Diane e o próprio Damon Albarn, com quem actuou em Londres, há poucos meses atrás, num concerto promovido pela Honest Jon.

Ainda que o seu registo se situe num território diferente daquele em que se movimentam os seus pares, na Honest Jons, esta convivência tem lentamente moldado a sonoridade de Simone White, constatando-se uma lenta deriva em direcção á folk.

No próximo dia 19 de Junho, Simone White apresentar-se-á a solo, na Galeria Ícone, no Pátio da Inquisição, num concerto em que a doçura da sua voz e das suas composições decerto será preponderante.

A procura de convívios, concertos, workshops e bailes de danças de tradição musical europeia, um conceito com raiz no muito bem sucedido festival “Andanças”, tem registado um crescimento exponencial a nível nacional, começando Coimbra a despertar sensibilidades para esta nova tendência.

Assim, numa co-produção Rádio Universidade de Coimbra, Colectivo Rodobalho e Centro Norton de Matos, o BalhaRUCo será um evento com uma dinâmica peculiar, aliando ao concerto tradicional o ensino da dança, transformando os espectáculos previstos numa experiência inovadora, na qual a interactividade entre o público e os músicos estará bem presente.

Marcado para as 22h de Sábado, dia 6 de Junho, o Centro Norton de Matos abre as suas portas para este BalhaRUCo, que contará com a presença de dois grupos reconhecidos, meritoriamente, com o primeiro lugar na eliminatória Portuguesa do Eurofolk - Concurso Europeu de bandas Folk.

Sobem então a este palco Coimbrão os Diabo a Sete e os Pé na Terra, precedidos por um workshop de iniciação às danças europeias. Ambos os grupos pertencem a uma nova geração de músicos que percorreram já um longo e activo caminho no trabalho de reinvenção de invulgares harmonizações, e instrumentações de reportórios cuja génese está ligada à rica e diversificada tradição oral europeia.

Os Conimbricenses Diabo a Sete, com espectáculos por vezes míticos e carismáticos, com destaque para as comemorações do 25 de Abril na cidade, têm-se afirmado como uma das propostas mais interessantes do tradicional /folk português. “Parainfernália”, o seu disco de estreia, foi um dos grandes discos da música nacional de 2007, estando actualmente a banda a preparar o seu sucessor. Alternando originais com versões de temas tradicionais e cruzando de modo requintado instrumentos como a sanfona, a concertina, o cavaquinho ou as gaitas de foles, a que se junta a voz muito peculiar de Julieta Silva, os Diabos criaram um som muito próprio, que tanto pode ser ouvido e apreciado em casa, como servir de pretexto para a dança, como é o caso.

Vindos do Porto, os Pé na Terra surpreenderam os críticos mais exigentes com o seu disco homónimo de 2008, essencialmente constituído por originais, mas a que se acrescentam também reciclagens de dois temas emblemáticos de Zeca Afonso ("Maria Faia" “ e “Balada do Sino”). Com uma forte valorização do seu lado poético, o disco alterna entre uma linhagem tradicional mais simples e uma subversão e modernização muito particular deste estilo e dos instrumentos que o compõem. No entanto, apesar do muito ritmo que preenche o disco, é ao vivo que a sonoridade do grupo aparece mais vincada, com uma força dançável contagiante.

Depois dos concertos, a prolongar o baile pela noite dentro, os Dj’s RUC do colectivo Golpe de Estado prometem surpreender-nos com as suas sonoridades étnicas.

Da aliança de todos estes factores espera-se este Sábado um inesquecível baile folk!

1. Pop, O construtor - How did you get started making music?
Dominique Leone: I started band classes in 7th grade, and started writing songs a couple of years later. I taught myself piano, and started transcribing harmonies from beach boys and beatles songs when I was 15 or 16. after that, it was pretty much all downhill. :)

2. PoP- Do you think that being a critic with Pitchfork taught you "the works" in modern pop music, so as to please the other critics?
DL:Hmm, do you mean like teaching the "canon" of classic records? I guess I learned a lot about indie rock canons, and especially learning what punk and post-punk stuff was influential to indie bands...but, I had already been reading about rock music, and listening to tons of things many years before I started writing for pitchfork. I don't really believe in a definitive series of classic works or anything-- people should listen to what they love, and not have critics or anyone else forcing their idea of what is "good" on them.

3. PoP-How do you see pop music's future?

Pois é!!! Depois da abodagem shoegaze dos Portugals, do garage rock dos Capsula, do r'n'b e do hip-hop de Ghuna X e Ex-Peão, dos ritmos dançáveis do kuduro progressivo dos Buraka Som Sistema e da pop solarenga com travos étnicos dos Ruby Suns, sentimos que nesta eclética programação da comemoração do 23º aniversário da Rádio Universidade de Coimbra, havia alguns estilos musicais em falta, como por exemplo o singer-songwriting.

Assim sendo, a RUC tem o prazer de anunciar o exemplo paradigmático da escrita de canções em português: a parceria entre Mafalda Veiga e João Pedro Pais. O concerto terá lugar na Praça D. Dinis esta 5ª feira, dia 2 de Abril, pelas 22h e vem abrilhantar a já anunciada festa de encerramento das comemorações do RUC23. Uma noite a não perder que conta, como já estava previsto em qualquer circunstância, com DJ's RUC e VJ's TVAAC a seguir ao concerto e pela madrugada fora.

O prémio é um Album de Ruby Suns, eles que vêm à cidade de Coimbra apresentar "Sea Lion"
Para isso deverão enviar o título da música (em Maori, e a sua tradução em português) juntamente com o nome e B.I. do autor, para passatempos@ruc.pt. , com o assunto "passatempo Ruby Suns". Os mails serão admitidos até às 17h00m do dia 26 de Março. Serão seleccionados os 10 melhores, que serão colocados no blog do Pop O Construtor, e dentro desses será sorteado o vencedor. O prémio deverá ser levantado na secretaria, a partir do dia seguinte ao concerto.

"No por vezes errático imaginário de Ryan McPhun encontramos uma frágil figura cuja relevância é maior que a imensidão na qual permanece perdida. Ao longo da primeira faixa de Sea lion, o fundador dos Ruby Suns relata-nos a desventura de um solitário pinguim azul, que afastado da sua colónia, se encontra à deriva, ao sabor das inconstantes ondas do Pacífico Sul, o mesmo Pacífico que segundo McPhun trará ambos de volta a casa.

Nascido na cidade de Ventura, California, McPhun cedo partiu para distantes paragens, rumando ao Quénia, seguindo-se a Tailândia e finalmente a Nova Zelândia. Ali conheceu Amee Robinson e juntos fundaram o projecto The Ruby Suns, inicialmente denunciando uma irreversível atracção pelo legado de Brian Wilson, tendo no entanto rapidamente evoluido para um combo tropicalista do qual nada é deixado de fora. Sea lion, o seu segundo álbum de originais, aclamado pela imprensa ao longo de 2008, cruza a pop solarenga dos Beach Boys e dos Animal Collective com os ritmos e vibrantes vocalizações da África Austral, cabendo ainda neste melting pop uma marcada componente electrónica e alguns traços de noise ou psicadelismo.

Os seus concertos são marcados por uma rara efervescência, como que espontâneos exercícios de contagiante inclusão. Na noite de 26 de Março, em Coimbra, espera-se uma celebração. Nessa mesma noite, todos nós nos deixaremos levar por uma inconstante onda vinda do Pacífico Sul."

Como João Picanço anda a espalhar charme nos ringues de patinagem artística, pistas de atletismo, tapetes de luta greco-romana e toda uma enorme panóplia de recintos desportivos, a sensualidade nos últimos programas de 4ª ficou reduzida a metade. No entanto, como +infinito / 2 = + infinito, os programas foram igualmente grandiosos.
